Opening Wednesday 26th September, 6-8pm
Phil Sayer’s works are completed ‘en plein air’. I often feel compelled to read this as ‘on plain air’ as I find a level of accuracy in it’s implicated image. An artist painting upon a wind willy or the toppling force of a gale, entirely swept up into and around it. Painting landscapes when on the land is a whole other animal than studio practice. The facts of your existence, your temperature, your eyesight, the light, the cubic meters of atmosphere that surround you … Sayer’s mark-makings are indebted to their presence.
