My title for this exhibition is taken from Edouard Vuillard’s assertion that he didn’t paint portraits, but people in their homes. Inspired by his example, I approached friends to sit for me.
I avoided planned compositions but took my cues from what I encountered at the first sitting, painting some of my subjects directly from life, but most back in the studio from drawings made at multiple sittings.
To the extent that I have succeeded, each painting should capture a specific ambience: the space the sitter inhabits, the objects they live among, their clothing and their demeanour all contributing equally to an amplified portrait.
