The ‘collage’ has undergone some degree of resurgence as of late. Perhaps it’s socio-critical origins and probing of the media and market ring truer than ever (think Hannah Hoch). True to form, McGregor has spliced and isolated a halftone capture of “a group of people – a displaced diaspora – that had been forcibly removed from their indigenous territory during the early to mid c20th”, fixing these cuts across his series. The artist acknowledges this process as “accepting that the image has departed from the original and subsequently claimed post-political independence”. Object-hood and the archive are preliminary materials, like graphite.
