15 April – 2 May 2009: Australian Volunteers International – Safe Spaces at Safe Shelters

Gallery 3

This exhibition provides a rare look into the lives of refugees and displaced communities affected by xenophobia attacks in South Africa.

During 2008 refugee communities seeking a safe and better life for their families in South Africa, were the victims of violent attacks. While seeking protection in emergency centres for safe shelter, the Art Therapy Centre facilitated a range of art-based counselling services with the displaced communities.

Michelle Atlas (ATC) in collaboration with the camp residents compiled a powerful record of the events and impact of the violence.
