13 June – 1 July 2006: Sharon Billinge – I Want…

Gallery 3

I want… is a series of drawings on items that were once desired enough to be bought and used but have since been discarded. Sharon Billinge has drawn with oil charcoal and silverpoint onto recycled canvas and wood.

Exquisitely rendered fine silk and soft folds of fabric contrast with the rough timber. Twisted figures and reaching hands writhe silently on the surface. The trails of fabric adorn the discarded article. Suddenly the obsolete object becomes precious again.

I want… is an investigation into how people place value onto fundamentally meaningless objects. Billinge studied art at St Martins College in England.   This is her first solo exhibition since moving to Australia.
